Summer training for open water events

Swimming in the open water is different in some important ways from pool swimming.  Training for triathlon or open water races should include both open water and pool training to achieve the best results.  The correct mix of open and pool training sessions depends on your experience with open water and the level of competition.

For triathlon beginners, especially those with little swimming experience, I recommend spending most of your time in the pool working on your technique and building your endurance.  You can practice your open water techniques including sighting and dolphin dives in the pool before taking your swimming outdoors.
